I have been working with furniture of for many years and I have restored a decent share of antiques. Here is a little advice if you want to restore some antique furniture on your own.
My first piece of advice for restoring antique furniture is taking it to an appraiser. You need to know what you have in your hands before you take the time to restore it. If you have a professional appraise that old set of bunk beds and they are worth anything then I suggest taking them to a professional restoration service. If those bunk beds turn out to just be an old set that isn’t worth anything, then you are all set to start working on them.
Check the stability of the piece of furniture. If you buy that set of antique bunk beds you definitely want to use them as bunk beds. Otherwise you bought a fancy looking display piece that won’t do you any good. Check for dry rot, rusted nails and hardware or water damage. All of this could have a negatively effect the ability of those bunk beds to hold weight.
